Road & Rail Weekend

On 27th and 28th June join us at our Road & Rail Gala which will feature passenger and freight trains running a very intensive service from 11am until 5pm, with two train departures roughly every 15 minutes! We will show a wide range of Steam, Diesel and electric locomotives. Gates open at 8am for you to see the steam engines being lit up and prepared for the day ahead! In our main “Arena” field, we there will be a modest display of vintage vehicles & stationary engines, entry to which is free, though we do ask you buy a train ticket to support the event! No pre-booking is required for visitors!

Exhibit Your Vehicle or Stationary Engine!

We are now accepting vehicle entries for our event! This year we would love to see a huge array of vehicles and even Stationary Engines, we have no strict rules on what you can bring to exhibit as long as you can safely bring it to the railway, though if you have something unusual, please let us know and we’ll try and accomodate you! We have simplified our process this year, we do have a pre-registration form which you can complete here.– however, if you aren’t sure if you can make it until the last minute, don’t worry, please come along on the day. Good food is available on-site all weekend from our neighbours at Amerton Farm.

Vehicles arriving at the railway should head to the far corner of the car park for Amerton Farm where you will see a railway volunteer who will safely guide you over our Level Crossing into our display field. If you have any questions please call us on 01889 271337 or email enquiries@amertonrailway.co.uk. All exhibits are displayed at your own risk, we require that those exhibiting Stationary Engines are suitably insured for running displays.

Register Your Entry!

Things to see and do

There will be an intensive service of freight and passenger trains all day and locomotives will be regularly swapped around to give you a chance to have rides and get photographs with all of the engines. There will be occasional double heading of engines to give everyone a bit of something different.

There will also be shed tours, where you can see our fleet of diesel, electric and steam engines that are currently being maintained by our team of volunteers.

We open our gates at 08:00 on the morning of each day so you can join us in the yard to see our volunteers lighting up the locomotives and cleaning them in preparation for the day ahead, and sometimes cooking their breakfast on the shovel! Trains run all day until around 17:00.

Our field, yard, and Picnic Area will be open for you to explore and capture pictures of the train in our excellent countryside and field railway environments. To access the fields please travel on the train to Chartley Road and cross the track, please ensure you look both ways!

Waterhouses Signal Box

Our Waterhouses signal box is now in full use throughout our Steam Gala, and regrettably we are unable to offer tours at this event due to it being in heavy use in a safety critical role. You can, however, get up close and personal from the outside and see how intensive the job in the signal box can be.

Closed in 1943, Waterhouses Signal box was once based on the Leek end of Waterhouses Railway Station (around 35 minutes from Amerton Railway), and is exceptionally special as it once controlled both the points and signals of the Standard Gauge North Staffordshire Railway, as well as the Home and Starting signals of the narrow gauge Leek & Manifold Valley Light Railway, so technically it is right at home on a narrow gauge railway! The signal box is also Award Winning, being awared joint winner of the Hendy and Pendle Trust Volunteers Award at the National Railway Heritage Awards in 2022.

Fun Fact: The levers in the signal box are moved around 500 times a day during our gala events. If they were evenly spread throughout the day, that would be roughly 1.5 lever movements every minute!

Road & Rail Weekend Ticket Prices

As you can imagine, our Galas are a little more costly for our charity to run, due to this, our “single” tickets are only valid for 1 full circuit on the railway. This includes a trip up to the Picnic Area with the option of returning on a later train.

We feel the best way to experience our gala is with our day tickets, these enable you to travel all day, as many times as you like. No pre-booking is required.

Day Tickets

You may be asked to relinquish your seat and re-join the queue after a trip during busy periods, don’t worry though you won’t be waiting long, we run around 30 passenger laps in a day!
Adult Day – £10
Child Day – £5

Single Tickets

If you’d only like to travel once, we still have a single ticket available, though the day ticket offers incredible value for money and helps support keeping this event running for the future!
Adult Single – £4
Child Single – £3

In the case of events such as this, the locomotives are subject to their availability. Lots of these engines are very old (Isabel is 129 this year!), and as such require a lot of work, care, and attention to keep them going. In the event of a locomotive becoming unavailable, we will endeavour to update this page as soon as possible.
